Green Buildings, Blue Skies
Summer is officially here. The skies are blue, the grass is green, the kids are out of school and the pools, lakes and beaches are feeling the love and enduring the stampede. Summer is a time of year when even those who build buildings for a living – the shelters where we work and live – yearn to be outdoors. But there is certainly no dichotomy there: increasingly, the construction industry is becoming a leader in bridging a gap between the natural world and the developed, or built, world.
The built environment has a profound impact on our natural environment, economy, health and productivity. In the United States alone, occupancy in the buildings in which we work accounts for:
- 70% of electricity consumption
- 39% of energy use
- 39% of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
- 40% of raw materials use
- 30% of waste output (136 million tons annually)
- 12% of potable water consumption
Many organizations such as the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) have developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, a set of criteria meant to establish universal standards for the adoption of sustainable “green” building and development practices. The LEED program provides benchmarks for water conservation, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality, among other measures.
Construction Jobs.com is a great resource for companies who are looking for LEED certified candidates. LEED, green building and sustainable building are all keywords and phases that can be searched by employers to find the exact candidate they are looking for.
